The hilt formed as a dish guard decorated with oak leaves around a panel decpiting the Royal Arms, a pair of scales,and a pair of shaking hands all under a phrygian cap. A good 17th century English hunting hanger with brass hilt, staghorn grip and 17.5" curved single edged blade inset with a copper armourers mark.The shell guard with inset with the Kings head and the knucklebow engraved with the owners name which appears to be "S ? RICH".
This style of hanger was also used by naval officers of the period, for documentation on this see Swords for Sea Service by May & Annis.
