NGS with Camperdown Clasp(James Mackenzie)
James Mackenzie A.B. HMS Agincourt. James was born C-1776 in Newcastle and his first entry shows him entering HMS Vanguard on Sept 5th 1793 age 21 and rated Able Seaman. This would suggest he was already an experienced seaman most probably in the merchant service. He served aboard Vanguard until Aug 12th 1797 when he was discharged to HMS Agincourt serving aboard untol Feb 15th 1798. During this period he was present at the battle of Camperdown Oct 11th 1797 when Admiral Duncan defeated the Dutch fleet off their coast. Following his service on Agincourt he was discharged to HMS Romney Feb 14th 1798. He was discharged to the hospital ship Spanker at Sheerness March 5th 1799 moving to HMS Africa during 1799 then onto HMS Union and finally to HMS Woolwich were he was finaly discharged from service April 19th 1802. All traces of him are lost until he was admitted to Greenwich hospital as a pensioner Aug 19th 1846,No 9224, aged 77. He was discharged dead on Jan 15th 1858. Ref: 8 £4000
